Early Years
"Children learn as they play; most importantly, in play, children learn how to learn."
Fred Donaldson
Early Years at Warfield
At the heart of our Early Years is our children. We aim to spark curiosity and grow a love of learning from the very start. Through a culture of kindness, respect, and teamwork, children learn to value themselves and others around them. Our approach is rooted in learning through play, play is how young children explore, discover, and make sense of the world around them in a safe and stimulating way. We encourage children to challenge themselves and feel proud of their achievements. Through our curriculum, we are able to provide children with rich and diverse experiences for them to investigate their world, this may be through activities such as story telling, creating pieces of art, role play, or experiments. We celebrate each child’s journey of achievement, promoting determination and resilience as they grow.
In the classroom, we use a variety of learning styles suited to the Early Years, free-flow, small group discussions, whole class lessons. Our children are able to develop relationships, grow their self-awareness and improve their communication and language skills by taking part in role paly in our Home Corner or building in our Construction Area or exploring their art and design ideas in our Creative Area.
The children have daily access to a well-resourced outdoor area during our free-flow time. This provides them with a variety of learning opportunities such as construction, water and sand play and performing on their very own stage. The children also have access to our meadow space which is a beautiful natural environment for them to explore and use their imagination in. It has a range of outdoor equipment for children to use and develop their gross motor skills. By learning and playing outside, the children find out about the natural environment, how to manage risks and how to use their own initiative to solve problems and co-operate with others. Through various activities and play children learn boundaries of behaviour; both physical and social, grow in self-confidence and become self-motivated.
Our aim is for children to leave our Early Years settings with a firm foundation to build upon not only in their learning but all areas of their development.
How we support everyone to learn
In Early Years we provide individualised support for children in a variety of ways. We provide small group learning with a specific focus which will develop the skills the children need to gain more effective access to the Early Years curriculum and become successful and independent. We provide a range of resources to ensure all children are able to join in with their school day confidently, such as, visuals, concrete number resources and sensory supports. Children who join our Early Years who have identified needs already are supported though a range of transition activities and on going communication and support from specialist outside agencies.
