 History at Warfield

At Warfield School, we aim to understand the significance of historical events and how they have shaped our present day. We aim to bring alive the past by making our History learning engaging and inspiring, whilst exploring various cultures and societies. Through the teaching of History, children will be equipped with the skills to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement, which will help them develop a sense of identity and understand the complexity of people's lives.

How we deliver our curriculum

Our curriculum has been carefully designed to allow for skills to progress as the children move through the school. We teach children a sense of chronology, and through this they develop a cultural understanding based on their historical heritage. Successively they learn to value their own and other people’s cultures in modern multicultural Britain by stimulating the children’s interest and understanding about the life of people; how they thought and relate it to today's world view. By considering how people lived in the past, they are better able to make their own life choices today.

Our History aims to inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people which links readily to cross curricular links in all other areas. For example, many topics link well with the creative arts, which allows children to explore different mediums.

In our school, History makes a significant contribution to citizenship education by teaching about how Britain developed as a democratic society. We teach children to understand how events in the past have influenced our lives today; we also teach them to investigate these past events and by doing so, to develop the skills of enquiry, analysis, interpretation and problem solving.

How we support everyone to learn

The learning of History incorporates all learners, irrespective of their ability and needs. We plan differentiation in our History; providing a variety of teaching and learning styles and differentiated opportunities, appropriate to all ability levels.

In History we use a diverse range of materials to engage and maximise our pupils' talents; artefacts, art, eye-witness accounts, fiction and photography. By using a range of visual sources, children can explore through discussions what they can learn and infer about specific time periods. Where responses are written, appropriate scaffolds are in place to support learners expressing their opinions or alternative methods (like voice/ video recording) can be used to record thoughts.

Across all year groups , in–house and external History experiences compliment, embed, extend and enhance the children’s confidence and interest in history.
