Geography

"Geography is the tapestry that weaves the world together" -

Gil Grosvenor (Former President of National Geographic)

Geography at Warfield

Our geography curriculum aims to instill a sense of awe and wonder about the world around us. As the children begin their Warfield journey, we encourage them to develop a sense of curiosity and fascination so that they can think for themselves, to take initiative, to ask questions and investigate our world.

Within our school community, we have many families with connections to other countries so we encourage children to share their knowledge. This helps to enrich their social, moral, and cultural development. We are committed to developing ‘Geographers for Life’ and instilling them with investigative and problem-solving skills for use both inside the classroom and beyond. With these skills we hope to develop our children into educated citizens who can make a valuable change to our world.

How we deliver our curriculum

At Warfield School, we use a variety of multi-media resources including ICT to engage our children and allow them to independently select and research a broader range of geographical information.

Based upon the Early Years Foundation Stage Statutory Framework 2021, Geography is integrated within The world around us as well as continuous provision throughout the year during freeflow. In years 1-6, Geography (physical and human) is taught both as discrete topics and within other subject areas such as History. The curriculum is mapped out to ensure that knowledge and skills are both revised and built upon from Year 1 up to Year 6. The curriculum is enriched with trips out of school and fieldwork within the school environment. Throughout the topic, the children explore and investigate Geographical themes to answer an enquiry question. Helping them to showcase and relate their learning to wider world.

How we support everyone to learn

The learning of Geography incorporates all learners, irrespective of their ability and needs. We provide a broad, balanced and diverse geography curriculum that both supports and challenges all children to ensure progression.

Our teaching is very interactive using a range of strategies to aid visual and auditorial experiences, including pictures, songs and stories. In addition, we use consistent technical vocabulary, displays to support understanding of challenging concepts and practical opportunities to reinforce knowledge. These practical approaches help children to make links between the pictures and the world around them. Knowledge is supported through scaffolding, teamwork, discussions and debates.
