"The important thing is to never stop questioning."
Albert Einstein (German physicist)
Science at Warfield
Within our school, science learning is driven by exploring, enquiring and explaining. We believe the in importance in cultivating a sense of excitement about the world around us and a curiosity to understanding it further.
Through a hands-on, inquiry-based curriculum, children will experience the joy of exploration and investigation. We foster enthusiasm and creativity through themed science weeks to ensure all children have the opportunity to explore a theme in greater depth.
How we deliver our curriculum
At Warfield School, we have carefully designed our curriculum to ensure a progression of skills and knowledge in line with the National Curriculum.
All year groups teach an explicit science-based topic for 3 half-terms, driven by a 'Big Question', which seeks to link different lessons within a topic together. Children learn through small-steps, building on previous learning to be able to answer the 'Big Question' at the end of the topic. 'Big Question' responses are not always written, essay-style answers, allowing children to demonstrate their knowledge, creativity and passion when answering.
Our Science learning links closely to cross-curricular activities, such as practical applications of Computing and Maths. Throughout the school, children are encouraged to collect, record, present and analyse data in different ways, such as using graphs or tables. We encourage children's historical thinking, when investigating the inventions and achievements of scientists over time.
How we support everyone to learn
Science learning incorporates all learners, irrespective of their ability and needs.
Our teaching is investigation-led and highly interactive. Practical resources and materials are frequently used to physically model new learning. Children are then given opportunities to investigate the concept themselves, working independently, in partners or within small groups.
All classrooms display their currently topic, full of key vocabulary and diagrams to support learning. Lessons use pictures and Widgit images, and adults model accurate use of new scientific vocabulary. These practical approaches help children to make links between their learning and have an anchor to refer back to in future lessons. Teaching and learning styles are differentiated to provide appropriate challenge and scaffold to all learners.
